The Basilica of St. Mary Major

Basilica of St. Mary Major

The Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome was consecrated by Pope Sixtus III in 435 to commemorate the Council of Ephesus (431), where the Virgin Mary was declared Mother of God.  Being the first Church in Rome to be dedicated to the Blessed Mother, it was called Major.  It is also known as Our Lady of Snow, from a miracle attributed to the Virgin Mary.
