The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the oldest and first in rank of the four great basilicas on Rome. It was built on a piece of land donated by Emperor Constantine the Great in 313. It used to be called the Lateran Mansion. Originally known as the Church of the Saviour, it was later dedicated both John, the Baptist and the Evangelist.
